CREATING AN ANIMATED AD BANNER

To generate a banner for online ad campaign with Photoshop, follow the steps below carefully.

Get the Photoshop and open it up. From the top menu bar pick the File New and in the dialog box that appears set the width and height for the banner, say 468pixels and 60pixels respectively. Two colored or black and white squares can be seen near the bottom of the tool bar. By double clicking on the left, foremost one, you can go into the Color Picker. A color could be selected by clicking around in the two color panes or by giving (typing) values into the boxes. Pixel Anatomy 101 will help you to choose “browser safe” colors.

After picking out the color of your choice and selecting the Paint Bucket tool from the tool bar click somewhere on the canvas. Now the canvas is filled with your desired color.

If you have an existing logo to be included in the banner, open it up and adjust it to the size you want. Since both .gif and .jpg are inferior quality, compressed formats, instead if you have the ‘original’ graphic files like .psd, .tif or something else, then use those. Even if you do not have, you can get a suitable one by editing a .gif file. When you have got the logo at the desired size to be included in the banner, using the Rectangular Marquee tool select the whole thing and copy it. Now come back to the window with the banner-to-be, paste in the logo and adjust it to the desired place, usually on the left side. Along with it a picture of a dog or cat also has to be pasted in on the right side.

To add some text, using the text tool click it on the canvas and type in the text you desire. For an animated banner, you have to place a line of text and position it where you want it on a new layer. By repeating the same steps add several snippets of text, each on its own layer. Now turn each layer on one at a time in the Layers window and thus an animation is generated where a small portion of the text appears at a time till the whole image is displayed. Though simple, this is a popular method of creating a banner a bit more attractive
A separate method is employed to generate an animated banner in Photoshop. Several shareware programs are out there that work very well. Go over to the Web Download Section and get a couple. Create each of the frames of the animation on different layers and save each as an individual .gif file. Leaving the first, all the text layers are turned off. Select File Export Gif 89a Export. The interlaced box is unchecked when the banners are made. But in the case of an ad banner it is not essential whether it is interlaced or not. Since it is not sure what color background/s the ad banner will be displayed against, it should not be made transparent.

Next save the first .gif as bnner1.gif or whatever you want. Turning on the second text layer, repeat the steps above and save it as banner2.gif. This process is continued until all the frames of animation have been saved as separate .gif files. Next step is to open the animation program of your choice and combine all these .gifs into a finished animation. Now it is upto you to decide the order and time between the frames and save the completed animation as a fresh file that will be uploaded to the web server. If you keep the separate files you can very easily make changes in the banner. For maximum results, you may make numerous banners with small different changes and run all of them. After comparing the clickthrough rates, retain the banner with the highest clickthrough discarding the rest or you may rotate them periodically.
