BANNER DESIGNERS AND SUITABLE COLORS

A web banner designer, while designing a banner, gives too much importance to the selection of colors because correct colors will give more impact and clarity to your banner message.  Color can emphasize, highlight and prompt your end users to click on your banner. Inappropriate usage of colors will compromise your message and cause confusion among your target audience.
The interpretation of a color is usually based on the target audience’s culture, physiology of the eyes, readability, their profession or industry and personal preference. Color can trigger emotion too.  The designer has to be very careful, while designing a web banner, about the colors he/she selects if you are targeting a particular country or global viewers. The color purple is associated with royalty in European countries whereas the color associated with royalty in the Netherlands is orange. While white color is associated with death in China, Western cultures regard white as a symbol of purity.
How the human eye processes color is another factor that determines the choice of colors. Purple could not be an ideal choice for a banner background because purple is a hard color for the eye to discern while yellow is the first color the eyes process. So yellow can be an ideal choice for the text on a dark-colored banner. But never use yellow as a background color, instead use a color less stressful on the eye. It is important to use high contrasting colors to make the text on the banner legible. Though black and white are the two highest contrasting colors, white banner is supposed to produce the lowest click-through-ratios.

One’s profession also determines what color you have to select for your banner. In the finance industry, color red indicates financial loss while in the medical department red is associated with an emergency or danger. So red is not an ideal choice for financial or health care banner designs. Colors greens, teals and blues tend to be safe because many of their psychological interpretations are connected with professionalism, safety, reliability, conservatism, technology etc. Banner designers use blue in banner design to raise the click-through-ratios because most of the browsers automatically click on the blue-underlined text link.

While choosing colors for banner designs, it becomes extremely necessary to consider where your banner will be displayed. Of course, you expect your banner to stand out a little from the site where it is placed, but at the same time you don’t want your banner to deliver the message, “Click me Click me”, so obnoxiously and ostentatiously. Skilled banner designers always take this aspect into consideration and they design the banners in such a way that they merge perfectly with the web pages.

Thus, as you see, selecting colors for designing banner ads is not an easy task, not as easy as using colors that are based on personal preferences. Designers look into many factors like readability, culture, the psychology of colors etc in the course of web banner designing.
